Console Wars: The Real Most Complete Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Sales Figures ever !

Console Wars: The Real and Most Complete Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Sales Figures ever!

The most comprehensive research ever done on Sega Genesis / Mega Drive sales figures!

In this article are detailed worldwide sales figures. It is the result of 30 years of research (since 1990), in the first 15 years with research in magazines from several countries and in the last 15 years looking for the most reliable sources on the internet. In it, several errors that have been disseminated over the internet over the last decades, especially due to incomplete or misleading data on wikipedia, which are multiplied countless times on other sites. This article presents the most complete data on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive sales figures available on the internet until July 2020. It will be kept updated periodically.
As can be seen from the data in this article, the term "Console Wars applies" mainly to the dispute in the USA, where Genesis was dominant but there was a dispute with snes. In the rest of the world, what was observed was a complete domain of Mega Drive and the market dispute was with the Master System, with snes being in third place. The sales in these other markets in general are quite underestimated, because in general there is no data or they exist until 1993 or 1994, when in these markets the 16-bits started to gain more strength later on. It is easy to see that in the sales figures of the Sega Master System, the main console in these markets such as Western Europe, Australia and South Korea. This phenomenon is identical and easy to see in the case of  Brazil, where there are more complete sales data. Although it has always been the dominant 16-bit in that country, sales of Mega Drive increased compared to the Master System in the second half of the 1990s and continue today. This article will also include Genesis / Mega Drive variant consoles licensed by Sega, which continue to be continuously launched worldwide until today.
This article is divided into 3 parts:
1. 16-bit Market Share against the SNES/SFC
2. Mega Drive / Sega Genesis Sales Figures (consoles)
3. Genesis vs. SNES (sales): By the Real Numbers

16-bit Market Share against the snes (even without considering the Sega-CD and 32X add-ons)
Only licensed consoles.
(as % of console sells by year)

North America:
Sega Genesis maintained its leadership in the North American 16-bit market throughout the 16-bit era (even without considering Sega-CD and 32X sales). If we consider the complete period after that era until today, Sega Genesis remains the best-selling console. Many misinterpret some information available, that with the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog on June 23, 1991, Sega finally won Nintendo's monopoly in the video game market in North America and took the lead in market share. Many websites misinterpret this information as if it were the first time that Genesis surpassed the sale of snes in North America, when in reality the snes would be launched just 2 months later. When Sega is said to have taken the lead in market share this means that it surpassed NES and snes together in the second half of 1991, as the market share information in North America includes also includes NES sales. The advantage of Genesis was much greater without considering the NES. There were also many years of wrong and incomplete information on wikipedia replicated on countless sites. And considering the entire post-16-bit was to the present day, the Gensesis / Mega Drive is also the best seller. It was no small feat, since since the 1980s, in addition to monopoly contracts with virtually all softhouses, Nintendo also pursued an aggressive policy with retail stores trying to dissuade them from trying to sell consoles from other companies (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwd56K7rp7A&feature=emb_logo).

In addition to the use of incomplete Sega Genesis sales reports, information errors were exacerbated by Nintendo's misconduct between 1991 and 1992, as Sega Genesis sales were double those of snes between its launch in 1991 and early 1992, Nintendo went so far as to deceive about sales figures in these two years, as follows.

There was in fact a real drop in the gap in mid-1992 due to Nintendo's monopoly contracts, which although considered illegal still continued for some years and allowed the very early and exclusive release of Street Fighter 2. Although the exclusivity of SF2's release was due to Nintendo's aggressive monopoly policy, it was used extensively by GamePro and EGM magazines to defend a false superiority of snes. Even so, Genesis maintained the leadership which increased again from 1993. Nintendo's disadvantage was so great that in 1993 its vice president in the USA helped to spread and inflate a fake news against the Sega CD Night Trap game, in order to reduce its sales and help Sega's image in the country. Nintendo also published a fake editorial in the main US magazines such as EGM, GamePro, among others (http://www.gamepilgrimage.com/book/export/html/10960 ; https://segaretro.org/Blast_processing ). The Sega Genesis' leadership only diminished in 1995 due to the internal war between Sega of America and the Japanese CEOs, which wanted to interrupt 16-bit support in favor of Sega Saturn, anticipating the launch of the latter in North America in approximately 1 year.

Japan:
The only country where Japanese Sega sold and distributed the Mega Drive was the only territory where the Mega Drive was not dominant, demonstrating once again its incompetence in these areas. In addition, Nintendo maintained its fierce and illegal monopoly contracts with many large softhouses for several years (for about a decade). Namco - one of the five biggest softhouses of the time alongside Sega, Konami, Capcom and SNK - challenged a monopolistic contract with Nintendo and launched several games for the Mega Drive in 1990. Namco was one of the first major softhouses to challenge this monopolistic practice of Nintendo, before it was considered illegal in court. This has angered Hiroshi Yamauchi (Nintendo), who publicly humiliated Masaya Nakamura (Namco). As a result, they did not release any games for the Mega Drive for almost a year. Nakamura's revenge was to release a perfect version of Rolling Thunder 2 (better than the original arcade) and the exclusive Splatterhouse 2 for the Mega Drive. And later Rolling Thunder 3 and Splatterhouse 3 were also released exclusively for the Mega Drive. This episode summarizes how Nintendo maintained its leadership in the Japanese market and also has to do with its downfall after Namco became the biggest softhouse on Sony's Playstation.

Brazil: (TecToy licensed by Sega)
Market with a complete dominance of Sega in the 8-bits with the Master System as well as in the 16-bits market with the Mega Drive. In Brazil, snes could only compete for the position of third best-selling console during the entire 16-bit era.
Since 1990 until today (2020) Tectoy is the company licensed by Segal for manufacturing and distributing the Mega Drive in Brazil. In 1994 Tectoy also faced competition from Megavision, an unlicensed version of Mega Drive that came with an adapter for Master System games. Despite being unlicensed, Dynacon launched the console at the country's largest video game fair ("Feira de Utilidades Domésticas 1994" in São Paulo), in addition to launching advertisements in Video Geme magazines. Since it was not licensed, it was a cheaper console than the licensed TecToy Mega Drive, it also came with a Master System adapter and joypads with turbo function, hurting TecToy sales in 1994. MegaVision stayed in the market for months until TecToy finally won the judicial war.

It officially sold Nintendo consoles in Brazil between 1993 and 2002. Mega Drive maintained an 80% market share in Brazil and alone sold much more than all nintendo consoles during these 10 years. Genesis vs. SNES: By the Real Numbers

North America:
Genesis sales (Aug 1989-2001): 25,639,461 : Genesis 1-3 + Nomad (without considering other console variations nor the Sega CD and the 32 X sales)
Genesis : other licensed console variations (1993-1996): between 100,000 and 200,000 units (estimate). Ref(s): above
Total Genesis Sales (2002-2020): unknown (29 different licensed versions of Sega Genesis released*)
*Sales estimates are only available for one of these 29 versions: Sega Genesis Classic Games Console, two 2016 editions (USA, AtGames, 2016): Around 1,000,000. Reference:
https://consolevariations.com/variation/console/atgames-sega-genesis-classic-games-console.
Even considering that the other 25 versions released between 2004 and 2016 sold less than a quarter of the 2016 version in North America, we would have at least more 6,000,000 units.
Genesis: other licensed Console variations (2004-2016): 7,000,000 (estimate)
Total Genesis Sales (1989-2016)32,539,461 (estimate)
Total Genesis Sales (1989-2020): unknown

Total Snes  Sales in North America (1991-2016): 19,533,930 (16,733,930 corrected)
Sega Genesis vs Snes in North America (1989-2016): 32,489,461 vs 16,733,930

This firs reference is wrong about snes sales figures in 1991 and 1992:
* "With the Genesis often outselling the SNES at a ratio of 2: 1, Nintendo and Sega both focused heavily on impression management of the market, even going to the point of deception, with Nintendo claiming it had sold more consoles in 1991 than it actually had, and forecasting it would sell 6 million consoles by the end of 1992, while its current US install base at the end of 1992 was only just more than 4 million units. ". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Genesis, with these two references:
CVG Staff (April 14, 2013). "History Lesson: Sega Mega Drive". CVG. Archived from the original on October 14, 2013. Retrieved October 10, 2013. Granted, the Mega Drive wasn't met with quite the same levels of enthusiasm in Japan, but in the US and Europe the Mega Drive often outsold the SNES at a ratio of 2: 1.

Brazil:
Total number of licensed Mega Drive console units produced and sold by TecToy in the country (1990-2012): around 3 million
Total number of licensed Mega Drive console units produced and sold by TecToy in the country (1990-2020): around 3,500,000 (3,200,000 until 2016)
Nintendo had a major investment in the country with the merger of two large Brazilian companies (Gradiente and Estrela) forming the company Playtronic. It officially sold Nintendo consoles in Brazil between 1993 and 2002. Mega Drive maintained an 80% market share in Brazil and alone sold much more than all nintendo consoles during these 10 years. The sum of all Nintendo hardware sales in Brazil (including NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance and GameCube) was 2 million units, while Mega Drive alone sold about 3.5 million of units.

Mega Drive was also dominant in the second largest market in South America: Argentina.

The Americas:
Therefore, with corrected numbers, sales of snes in the Americas should not have exceeded 18,000,000 units.
